Take part in the International Coastal Cleanup campaign, 16 September - 16 October 2017

We are now returning from our holidays refreshed and invigorated. Most of us enjoyed summer activities such as swimming, diving and fishing along the beautiful Greek coastline. However, we couldn't help but notice litter items such as cigarette filters, plastic straws and plastic bottles polluting beaches and the seabed bottom and become frustrated with all those who refuse to use the trash bins. And according to scientists, if we continue polluting at this pace, over the next decade for every 3 kg of fish in the oceans there will be 1 kg of plastics!

So let's renew our commitment for Clean Seas and Beaches on the occasion of the International Coastal Cleanup campaign! It is an opportunity to measure what we "left behind" on the beaches we visited and send a message that we care about the sea and our future!

As national coordinator of the ICC in Greece, HELMEPA invites you to organize a coastal cleanup together with friends, colleagues or family between 16 September and 16 October 2017, which is defined as "Month of Voluntary Action for the Marine Environment".

It is simple, just follow these 4 steps:
1. Choose the beach you wish to clean.

2. Complete the Registration Form and don't neglect to include the geographical coordinates of the beach, so that the exact spot and cleanup is depicted on the Global Interactive Map of Ocean Conservancy, global ICC coordinators.

3. Purchase your gloves and bags.

4. Once your cleanup is concluded, send us the completed Data Cards along with photographs of the event, if available, by email, fax or registered post: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , fax 210-9353847, postal address: HELMEPA - 5, Pergamou Str, N. Smyrni 17121.

HELMEPA will provide you with the following:
  • Detailed instructions for organizing the cleanup
  • The campaign's e-poster to promote your cleanup to the local community
  • Data cards
  • Registration on HELMEPA's "Marine Litter Watch" Users' Community of the European Environment Agency (EEA), an electronic application available on smartphones or tablets useful for online recording of litter items. This application can be downloaded on Αndroid devises and i-Phone/i-Pad devises
  • Collection of your recyclable materials by the Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation (HE.R.R.Co.), which supports the Campaign nation-wide
  • Commemorative participation Diplomas to the coordinator of the action and young volunteers under the age of 18
  • Projection of each cleanup on HELMEPA's Facebook page with the aim to attract wider participation
