Voluntary beach and forest cleanup at Xylokastro

In the framework of the Mediterranean Forest Week and at the invitation of the Intercultural / Environmental organization "FILOXENIA", HELMEPA coordinated beach and forest cleanup in Sarantapichiotika region at Xylokastro, on Thursday 23 March 2017.

HELMEPA responded with pleasure to the invitation, as the cooperation between the two organisations is a follow-up of the successful, recent conclusion of the "Educational Community and Public Awareness Campaign on the Marine Environment, Shipping and Sciences" in Corinth and Aigio. HELMEPA's Campaign, is carried out across 14 cities of Greece between 2014 and 2017, with the support of LloydÂ’s Register Foundation (LRF).

The participants at the cleanup event were 11 students from the Technical High School of Xylokastro and 15 students from the French Agricultural School, along with their teachers. Participants were informed by HELMEPA's and FILOXENIA's staff on marine litter and the effects of pollution on the natural environment. Moreover, the French students received information material and HELMEPA's data card sheets in French.

The young volunteers filled with enthusiasm 25 large bags of garbage and separated the recyclables, recording all the items in special data cards, in order to extract useful scientific data pertaining to quantities, composition and origin of waste.

HELMEPA warmly congratulates all the participants for demonstrating their volunteering spirit, thus expressing their love and respect for our forest ecosystems and natural environment.
